How To Set Up a Blog In 3 Easy Steps

Hi! I am Vanessa with MomBlogFromHome and I’m going to show you how to set up a blog in 3 easy steps! Sometimes I like to read and get all the details about something and sometimes I just need a right to the point answer. This is the right to the point answer on how to set up a blog in 3 easy steps.

How To Set Up a Blog In 3 Easy Steps - Mom Blog From Home

1. Get a Domain Name

If you have researched and decided that blogging is right for you, then next you want to decide what your niche is or what you want to blog about. After you have nailed down your topic it is time to name your blog. Most bloggers use the name of their blog as their domain name or URL as well. In my opinion, I think it would be confusing to call your blog one thing but have your web address something different. Once you have that all finalized it is time for step one. Get a domain name!

What Makes a Good Domain Name

You want your name to be short and simple. Something people will be able to remember. Instead of my domain being “howtostartamomblogfromhome” I just went with momblogfromhome which is much simpler.

Let’s say your domain name has a number in it then you have to decide if you want it to be the actual number or the number spelled out. For example www.invoice2go.com is an amazing bookkeeping site my husband used for his lawn care company. They use the actual number instead of spelling out the number 2 as two.

However, keep in mind that you don’t want it to not make sense spelled out either. Whatever your name is that you come up with just make sure that it looks good all together. Make sure it doesn’t spell any other bad words when pushed together into a domain name.

Where to Purchase Your Domain Name

There are several places to purchase your domain name. One of the bigger names is GoDaddy. I am not a huge fan of them myself. They like to upsell you a hundred times before you can check out. On the other hand, NameCheap does not do that and their domains are fairly priced. Plus, when I bought my last domain name there I looked at RetailMeNot.com first and found a 10% off coupon!

Domains run anywhere from $2.99+ but the average is around $10-$15 for a whole year. Not too expensive! It just depends on the domain name. As of writing this the domain name blogfromhome.com is available for only $3,095.00! This domain I would assume has a lot of traffic going to it making it worth a lot more money.

There is also the option to purchase your domain name with the hosting provider you choose. Sometimes there is a bundle package or sometimes it is even free!

HostGator offers a free domain with certain hosting packages.

2. Get Hosting For Your Site

After you purchase your domain name, you need to get hosting for your blog. The best example I have heard to explain domain names, hosting and WordPress is that it is just like a brick and mortar business. The domain name is your address, the hosting is the property/building, and your blog on WordPress is your business inside. I hope that makes sense. The point is that you need all three and they all work together to make the foundation of your blog.

Decide where to purchase hosting for your blog

There are three top places that people use for hosting. There is BlueHost, HostGator, and SiteGround. I have tried all three and the one that I currently have is SiteGround. I had no problems with the other two that is just the one I decided to go with when I started this blog. It really just is your preference on which one but for more information on choosing your hosting go here.

I will add that HostGator has offered my readers a special promotion using my referral link right here!

If you chose NameCheap and SiteGround and need help connecting your domain name and your hosting, I have the instructions right here!

3. Install Word Press

Lastly, you will need to install the WordPress plug-in. Log into your hosting account and from there install the WordPress plug-in. Now that everything is all connected you are ready to go! You officially have a blog!

If you aren’t sure where to go from here then don’t worry I have the perfect thing for you! I was in your shoes not too long ago! It felt like I didn’t have all the pieces of the puzzle yet. I felt like I had this hollow shell of a blog and I had no idea how to fill it or where to even begin!

Even after I had followed many other bloggers, taken courses, read ebooks, I still felt like something was missing. Then I came across this course and it has helped me so much! It was well worth the investment to guide me through the steps to getting my blog up and running! I absolutely love this course and I have since invested into some of her other courses and ebooks and I have loved them all!
